Resolution regarding improperly maintained audible
pedestrian signals.
WHEREAS, audible
pedestrian signals (street signals) are proving to be unsafe at many street
crossings because they are not properly maintained or correctly calibrated,
thereby giving the wrong signals to blind pedestrians; and,
WHEREAS, the inattention to safety constitutes a
clear and present danger to blind pedestrians who often rely far too much on
these audible devices rather than listening to appropriate traffic sounds:
Now Therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by The National Federation of the
Blind of Washington in Convention Assembled this 21st day of October
in the City of Olympia, Washington; that
this organization insist that where these signals are installed they receive
appropriate and constant monitoring and maintenance in the interest of public
safety; And,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we call upon state and
municipal officials to consult with the organized blind in the placement and
ongoing advisability of such signals in any locations.
